MAWL: Model, Assist, Watch, Leave Training Method
The Complete Coaching Training Cycle for Discipleship and Mentoring
Model, Assist, Watch, and Leave (Launch) are the key coaching training cycle steps used by mentors and coaches to guide mentees and trainees into new skills. MAWL provides a structured framework for effective skill development and knowledge transfer in any coaching relationship.
What is MAWL?
MAWL represents a four-phase training cycle that guides the coaching process from initial modeling to independent leadership. Think of it like learning to ride a bicycle - you've likely experienced this cycle both as a learner and as a mentor.
Model
Modeling is simply providing an example of a practice or tool. It is the briefest part of the training cycle, usually only needing to be done once. It creates awareness that a practice exists and gives a general idea of what it looks like. When a child sees someone riding a bicycle, that is the MODEL phase.
Assist
Assisting is allowing the learner to practice the skill with "hand-holding" from the mentor. This phase requires the mentor to be directive and take an active coaching role. It doesn't last until full competence, but merely until they understand the basics. When a parent holds onto the bicycle while a child learns balance, that is the ASSIST phase.
Watch
Watching is the longest phase, involving more indirect contact with the learner. It seeks to develop full competence in all facets of a skill and may be ten times longer than the first two phases combined. The learner gradually takes more responsibility and initiative. When a parent observes a child ride unsupervised, that is the WATCH phase.
Leave
Leaving is a sort of graduation when the learner becomes a peer of the mentor. Periodic contact and peer mentoring may continue if they're in the same network, but the learner is now fully independent. When a parent releases a child to ride their bicycle completely unsupervised, that is the LEAVE phase.
