Getting Started
MAWL is a discipleship coaching app that helps you track progress through customizable training items using the Model, Assist, Watch, Leave methodology. The app integrates with your iPhone contacts to help you monitor and guide your disciples' spiritual growth through structured phases.
You can add contacts in two ways:
- Add from Phone: Select contacts from your iPhone's native contacts app
- Add Manually: Enter contact information directly in the app
Tap the "+" button in the main list view to add new contacts.
The training items cover essential discipleship concepts including:
- Basic discipleship principles (God Uses Ordinary People, Simple Definition of Disciple)
- Spiritual practices (S.O.A.P.S. Bible Study, Prayer Walking)
- Evangelism and outreach (The Gospel, Baptism, 3-Minute Testimony)
- Leadership development (Duckling Discipleship, Leadership Cells)
- Multiplication strategies (3/3 Group Pattern, Four Fields Tool)
Each item progresses through the MAWL phases: Model → Assist → Watch → Leave.
For each training item, you can select the current phase:
- Model: You demonstrate while they observe
- Assist: You work together with guidance
- Watch: They perform independently while you observe
- Leave: They're ready to teach others
When you select "Leave," all previous phases are automatically marked as complete. Tap the phase buttons in the checklist to advance progress.
Data Management
When you enable iCloud sync, your MAWL data is encrypted and stored in your personal iCloud account. This allows you to:
- Access your data across multiple iOS devices
- Automatically backup your progress and notes
- Restore data if you get a new device
Your data remains under your control and is subject to Apple's iCloud privacy policies. You can disable iCloud sync at any time in the app settings.
MAWL provides several backup options:
- iCloud Sync: Automatic backup when enabled
- Export Data: Create a backup file in Settings
- Import Data: Restore from a backup file
We recommend regular exports as an additional safety measure, especially before major iOS updates or device changes.
Yes, you can export your data in a standard format that can be used for backup purposes. The export includes:
- All contact progress data
- Notes and timestamps
- App settings and preferences
While the export format is primarily designed for backup and restore within MAWL, the data is stored in a readable format that could potentially be used with other tools.
If you delete the app:
- Data stored locally on your device will be lost
- Data synced to iCloud will remain in your iCloud account
- You can restore your data by reinstalling the app and enabling iCloud sync
Important: Always export your data before deleting the app to ensure you have a complete backup.
Contact Management
No, MAWL only accesses contacts that you specifically select to add to the app. The app requests permission to read your contacts, but it only uses the contacts you choose to track in your discipleship program.
You can revoke contact access at any time in iPhone Settings > Privacy & Security > Contacts, though this will limit the app's functionality.
Yes, you can add notes at the contact level. These notes are separate from individual training item progress and can include:
- Prayer requests
- Meeting notes
- Personal observations
- Follow-up reminders
Notes are synced with your other data and included in backups.
You can reorder contacts by long-pressing on a contact in the main list view. This will reveal a context menu with options including "Reorder." You can then drag contacts to your preferred order.
The reordered list will be saved and synced across your devices.
Yes, you can initiate messages to your contacts directly from MAWL. Long-press on a contact in the main list to reveal the context menu, then select "Send Message." This will open your default messaging app with the contact pre-selected.
This feature requires the contact to have a phone number or email address in your contacts.
